SECTION 2/ RECRUITING RULES & RESTRICTIONS

Show notes

SECTION 2/ RECRUITING RULES & RESTRICTIONS Recruiting rules exist to create fairness and structure, but they can be confusing without guidance. Athletes and families who understand these restrictions avoid violations and protect their eligibility.

Communication Rules College coaches are limited in when and how they can communicate with recruits based on grade level, sport, and division. Silence does not equal lack of interest—it often means a rule is in place.

Contact Periods Recruiting calendars include contact, evaluation, quiet, and dead periods. Each period defines what interactions are allowed, including visits, in-person contact, and off-campus evaluations.

Visits

Unofficial Visits: Allowed at any time at the athlete’s expense

Official Visits: Limited in number and tightly regulated by the NCAA

Understanding visit rules helps families plan strategically.

Offers & Verbal Commitments Verbal offers and commitments are non-binding. Only a signed National Letter of Intent (NLI) or financial aid agreement is binding.

Third-Party Influence Athletes must avoid improper benefits, agents, or recruiting services that violate NCAA rules. What seems harmless can cause serious eligibility issues.

Key Takeaway Recruiting restrictions are about timing, not talent. Athletes who know the rules stay patient, compliant, and in position when opportunities open.
