Show notes

SECTION 6: PLAYING TIME, REDSHIRT, & ELIGIBILITY aying time and eligibility are closely connected—and often misunderstood. Athletes who understand these rules make smarter decisions and avoid long-term consequences.

Playing Time Reality Early playing time is not guaranteed at any level. Depth charts, physical readiness, scheme fit, and trust determine when athletes see the field.

Redshirt Rules A redshirt allows an athlete to delay competition while retaining a year of eligibility.

Athletes may play in a limited number of games and still redshirt (per NCAA rules)

Redshirts are often strategic tools for physical and developmental growth

Medical Redshirt (Hardship Waiver) Granted if an athlete suffers a season-ending injury early in the season and meets participation limits. Approval is not automatic.

Eligibility Clock

NCAA eligibility typically allows 4 seasons of competition within 5 years (Division I & II)

Division III has different participation rules

Transfers, redshirts, and injuries impact the clock

Practice vs. Competition Practicing does not use eligibility—only competition does. Understanding this distinction is critical.

Roster Management Scholarship renewal, roster turnover, and the transfer portal affect opportunity. Athletes must evaluate development plans honestly.

Key Takeaway Playing time is earned, eligibility is limited, and time is the most valuable resource. Athletes who understand these rules protect their development and maximize opportunity.
